35 new jobs 🤩 and the story of my worst interview ever
Hola! Two weeks ago one of you commented on LinkedIn that you wanted to see more entry-level jobs here so I’ve been keeping my eyes open 👀. While curating this new list, a few memories from my worst job interview ever came to my mind. It got me thinking so I thought I’d tell you all about it.
Back in 2018, I was about to graduate and had been moving around different countries for two years. I was running out of money and picked up a few freelance gigs. One part of me wanted to settle down although I had no clue where or how. I saw an exciting job offer back home in Barcelona and submitted my application. The first interview was quite successful. Then there was a written task. Then came the second interview with the leadership team. Well…
I felt so small in that interview. So vulnerable. I’m not entirely sure why.
When asked about the length of my experience, I said “two years”. This wasn’t true. Yes, I had worked two years full-time between finishing my Bachelor's and starting my Master's. However, my work experience started at 18 years old. Why did I not talk about any of my internships, part-time jobs, or volunteering roles? I wasn’t able to showcase the multi-faceted professional I was. I did not know how to connect the dots in my CV, my motivation, and my skills. The interview questions were not easy and I ended up feeling like running away from the screen 🙈.
To be honest, I don’t think there are magic recipes to overcome such situations (Google it and you’ll find plenty of articles). Especially if you are just finishing your studies and your self-esteem is not that high. But here’s something I think I could have done better: telling my story. No matter your previous experience or how you fit in the role, there must be a story about you and why you want that job. You don’t need a perfect CV but rather a way to engage whoever is listening.
Think about it. You got this 🙌🏽
